Servers and Project 2019 Project Server 2019 Upgrade Steps

Upgrading to Project Server 2019 can be broken down into four phases. These include:

  • Create a Project Server 2019 form
  • Copy and move your database
  • Connect and upgrade your SharePoint Server 2016 content database
  • Check your SharePoint content database

The following provides more details about these upgrade steps.

Create your Project Server 2019 form

The first step in the Upgrade Project Server 2019 process is to create the Servers and Project 2019 form. Since database attachment is an auxiliary method of Upgrade Project Server 2019. Also, you will add and upgrade your Form Project Server database to this form in the next step.

Note that the crucial difference between installing Project Server 2019 compared to the way they installed it in the previous version is that the Project Server 2019 installation is now a part of the SharePoint Server 2019 installation. The Project Server 2019 runs now as a service application in SharePoint Server 2019 and does not require a separate installation.

Important

Therefore, the Servers and Project 2019 can only be enabled on the Enterprise version of SharePoint Server 2019. You know that Project cannot enable Server 2019 on SharePoint Server 2019 with a Standard license.

Note

For even more detailed information about how to install a new Project Server 2019 farm. See the documents for Deploy Project Servers 2016 or 2019.

You can copy and move your databases

The second step in the Project Server 2019 Upgrade process copies all databases required for your Project Server 2016 environment to your new Project Server 2019 environment. This is a two-step process:

  1. SharePoint Server 2016 farm read-only mode for server farm administrator backs up the mentioned following two databases from the SQL Server instance:
  • SharePoint Server 2016 content database that contains your all project data
  1. The server farm administrator restores a backup copy of all the databases to the SQL Server 2016 or 2017. That will instance being used to host the Project Server 2019 farm all the databases.

You can use SQL Server Management Studio to copy and restore the databases of the Servers and Project 2019.

Attach and upgrade your SharePoint Server 2016 content all database

The third step in the Upgrade Project Server 2019 process attaches and upgrades your SharePoint Server 2016 content database that contains your Servers and Project 2019 site data to your new Project Server 2019 farm.

Therefore, you must run the Mount -SPContentDatabase PowerShell cmdlet in the SharePoint 2019 Management Shell to do this.

  1. First, open the SharePoint 2019 Management Shell as an Administrator.
  2. At the Powershell command prompt, type such as bellow:

Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name <database name> -WebApplication <Web application name>

For an example:

Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name: WSSContentContosoPWA -WebApplication “SharePoint 80”

Check your content database

The fourth step in the upgrade is to test your database of newly attached and upgraded content. You will use the Test-SP Content Database PowerShell CMSlet to test against this web application in which you have to verify all the specifications contained within the content database in the specified specific SharePoint Server 2019 environment. Installed in the application. However, this cmdlet will not update your data, anyway.

  • Open SharePoint 2019 Management Shell as Administrator.
  • At the PowerShell command prompt, type such as bellow:

Test-SPContentDatabase -Name <database name> -WebApplication <Web application name>

For example, like this:

Test-SPContentDatabase -Name WSSContentContosoPWA -Web application “SharePoint 80”

It will test the SharePoint-80 web application against specifications listed in the WSSContentContosoPWA database and publish the results.

Therefore, the results of the Test-SPContentDatabase cmdlet will note the contradictions that will found in your upgraded SharePoint Web application in your new SharePoint Server 2019 environment. The results do not mean that SharePoint 2016 content all database Upgrade Project Server has failed. But will only note the things you need to find in your new environment. Below are some checks that may appear in your results.

Check your SharePoint Server 2016 content database for resource plan and migration information

Check the MSP_RESOURCE_PLANS table for the following columns:

ColumnValues

RESPLAN_IS_MIGRATED “0” not migrated

“1” migrated

MIGRATED_REV_COUNTER The value shown is number of attempts which took into migrate all resource plan. If the command runs repeatedly, this value is incremented each time, with a maximum value of 50.

MIGRATION_ERROR_INFO Provides additional information above all for migration:
